Shift in Paradigm Technological? Ideological?

A paradigm shift can be happened in many ways. The paradigm shift can be happened Ideally, technology or the way people behave. The major reason shift happens because people think it is more logical and suitable in the society than before. People are rational animals, even through they do not always produce rationally they think and hope the most effective way to in act.

One of the examples can be the Suit. The history of suits are huge and grand, but we can think this simply. Let me give you a question. Why do people wear suits in business or other important time? In the history, people do not wear suits for every business moment. Each country had their style through their culture background. However, the paradigm shift occurs when people started to change their idea through revolution or enlightenment. The industrial revolution happened in an early 18th century, the changes of politics and the way how commoner behave change minds of the people. The artistic and sartorial revolution during the 19th century sharply changed the mind of simpler clothing is better than formal jeweled clothing. These type of shift can be called as “ideology shift” that people started to believe that clean and simple clothes looked more mature and elegant.

Another example can be Iphone. Before the iPhone came out in 2007, many people were listening to Mp3 for their music. Iriver were one of the major potential company who control the mp3, but as Steve Job introduced the iPhone, Mp3 were no longer used. People changed their taste and trend because it is more “comfortable”. Human relies on tools since the beginning of the civilization, and more convenient tool equals more effective tools. iPhone was able to function as internet, music, and other features that surpass the functionality of old Mp3 players. These type of situation is called, "technological shift". The paradigm of using certain technology was shifted to other due to the better creativity and innovation compared to the old technology. We also can see this aspect on the technological shift in weapons from bow to the gun because it is more convenient and effective to kill others.

  1. They both sound very interesting, however, I feel that the formal apparel is a much better example of a paradigm and you could strengthen your argument by tying it to another social development; ex- the change in formal suit culture in response to the condition of the middle class? food for thought

  2. I never thought of the suit in the way that you are presenting it. However, after hearing your pitch, I find that it is a highly relevant and interesting topic. I do not know about the time period that you are going to focus on, but I think that it would be interesting if you choose to write about the perception that the public has in regards to the male in a suit. This topic is unique and very focused. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

  3. I'm liking the specificity in your first idea. The changing role of formal clothing, suits in particular, can surely be attributed to altered attitudes and opinions of the sphere of business. I liked how you also gave a specific example for your "technological shift" but it may come across as cliche if you choose to go with the iPhone, though it is a very significant product that has shaped technological advances in recent years.
